and $b$ is the y-intercept

they give us that the slope is 2
so our $m = 2$

then to find $b$ , we temporarily plug in the point they gave us for x and y

so  $3 = 2(1) + b$
and solve for $b$
3 = 2 + b
1 = b
so our $b = 1$

put this together and we get
$y = 2x + 1$ as our answer
