  • In 1951, Lorraine Hansberry moved to New York and joined the black journal <em>Freedom Newspaper</em>. Her first job was to cover the Sojourners of Truth and Justice in Washington D.C., which was a radical protest led by African American women.  
  • As she was against colonialism and imperialism, she wrote in support of the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, which was a rebellion from the locals against the British forces.
  • Her father, Carl Hansberry was a supporter of the Urban League, a non-partisan organization from New York against racial discrimination in the United States. He also was a supporter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
