The following is a piece of short-short fiction. Read the story, and then answer the question that follows. Jayden was finally s

atisfied. The floors were swept and mopped, the shelves were dusted, and the windows were so spotless that there appeared to be no division between the store window and the shoppers bustling along the busy sidewalk. “Are you expecting company?” Jayden’s mother asked. “No,” replied Jayden, surprised. Based on the author’s providing text evidence, what conclusion can you draw about Jayden’s point of view?
A. Jayden is a meticulous person who likes things to be perfect, based on how he cleans.
B. Jayden is an untrustworthy person who often lies to his mother, based on his reply to her.
C. Jayden is a dismissive person who lets his mother do all the cleaning, based on how he speaks to her.
D. Jayden is an impatient person who wishes his mother would clean the house, based on how he decides to clean.

Of course it would be A because Jayden is SURPRISED when his mother asks him if he is expecting company, which means he is dumbfounded by why she would ask that.

How does Orwell use satire to support his purpose in this passage?
katrin [286]

Answer: He uses exaggeration to make communism appear too simplistic.

Explanation:

Animal farm is Orwell's allegorical novel about a group of animals that rebel against their human farmer. In its essence, this novel is a satirical story against the Soviet Union.

Satire is a genre in literature in which the author employs exaggeration, irony and humor to criticize people and their actions, often in relation to political issues.

For example, Orwell exaggerates with the stupidity of the animals. When Boxer is sent to a slaughter house and brutally murdered, Squealer lies to them by saying that he went to a hospital. Although the animals saw the van, they believed what he said. In this way, Orwell demonstrates the lack of judgement present in the Russian society.

In this light, the correct answer would be that Orwell uses exaggeration to make communism appear too simplistic.

From the options above the one with strongest connotation to replace one poor word would be: (C) Miserable

Speech is not innocent and words are sometimes, consciously or unconsciously, charged with an interpretation different from what is said. In this miserable case it could be taken in a derogatory way or simply as a person who is having a bad time and being very sad feels miserable. Although surely, there could have some other interpretation of the word.
