Mary Rowlandson, née White, later Mary Talcott was a provincial American lady who was caught by Native Americans during King Philip's War and held for 11 weeks before being recovered. In 1682, six years after her experience, The Sovereignty, and Goodness of God: Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson was distributed. This content is viewed as a fundamental American work in the artistic type of imprisonment accounts. It experienced four printings in 1682 and earned readership both in the New England settlements and in England, driving it to be considered by some the first American "best seller".
