The typical settings of gothic works usually include medieval times, melancholy communities, religious depictions, and sometimes haunted vibes. It contributes to the mood by providing a depressing, calming, and/or emotional feeling for the observer. An example of a religion- based gothic painting would be Holy Face by Joan Gascó. A more melancholy example would be Wells Cathedral by Frederick H. Evans. Haunted-like paintings would be one such as The Beast Acheron by Simon Marmion. Most gothic paintings have a strange feel about them.
