There were different in many ways.

The North was generally more industrial. Factories and businesses were common, and industry thrived because of the abundant natural resources. Farming was done on a small scale in private farms. Slavery had disappeared, and a large percentage of the workforce consisted on European immigrants.

The South, instead, relied largely on plantations of crops such as cotton and tobacco. The success of these plantations was inextricably linked to slavery. There were less urban centers, and travelling between different areas was more difficult.

Well, it's similar because they were still more privileged than anybody else, and it's different because the South had a lot more slaves.
