Red is redeemed. They seem to base the story around Andy, until you discover that Red was learning from Andy about how to gain hope again. Another way to put redemption is ‘the price of salvation’.
The Vietcong set up checkpoints around the nation, so that would've definitely been a literal and figurative roadblock to any refugees. Hope this helped.
