The Meji restoration was characterized by the political revolution in 1868 that saw the ousting and final demise of the Tokugawa shogunate (a military government 1603–1867) which made way for the Emperor Meji (1868–1912) that brought political and social change to Japan and subsequent modernization and Westernization of the country.
