Economically they were used as slaves by the whites to produce staffs, politically they had no right to vote, and socially they had no respect from the whites.

They faced a lot of discrimination such as having to go to separate schools, bathrooms, etc. They were the first ones to get laid off. They were bullied in ways such as black face. They had less of a chance of getting into a college as a white person in the same environment. Because they hardly ever got into college they couldn't get very good jobs. The main difference between the two movements was that supporters of Black Power were prepared to use violent methods to achieve these goals. Proponents of the Black Power Movement did not constitute a homogenous group. Malcolm X then served as the public face of the organization for a dozen years, where he advocated for Black empowerment, Black supremacy, and the separation of black and white Americans, and publicly criticized the mainstream civil rights movement for its emphasis on nonviolence and racial integration.
