Pine trees contain both male and female cones, and the ones that produce pollen are the male cones. This pollen needs to fall on a receptive female cone for the embryo to grow (it usually takes 2 years). Each grain of pollen contains the genetic information of the pine tree of which the cone hangs. Animals such as squirrels also help in the dispersal of seeds.
