After the negotiations collapsed, the US military made an unsuccessful attempt to release the hostage in Operation Eagle Claw on April 24, 1980, which resulted in a helicopter RH-53D and two C-130 transport planes crashing and eight US military and one Iranian civilian dead. The hostage-taking came to an end with the Algiers Accords on January 19, 1981. The American hostages were released a day later, just minutes after President Carter's end of term.
