The map shown here is the Mercator Projection. This is the map most commonly used in the world today. It helps diagram many land areas and features, but it distorts some parts of the world close to the poles such as Greenland and Antarctica. Due to Earth's spherical nature these to not translate well to a flat map, so they appear much bigger than they actually are.

The Silk Road was not exactly a road: it was better said a network of Roads leading from China to the Mediterranean Sea.
It went through the very mountainous region of Asia, so a number of different routes existed that circumvented the mountains.
