However, Czar Alexander I (Russia) in response order a scorched-earth policy and had the land burned and Moscow(Russia's capital) burned to the ground too to prevent Napoleon's army from gaining shelter and to starve the army as the harsh Russian winter approached. Napoleon in response retreated and lost a huge amount of his force during this campaign due to the weather and harassment from adversaries during this retreat.
