The Byzantine Empire saw the potential of the city since it was positioned between the Balkans and Anatolia. it controlled the Bosphorus strait which is a narrow split between Europe and Asia and is located in modern Turkey. Since the only way to get from the Black sea into the Aegean sea and beyond was to go through the strait that meant that they could tax merchants and also every person that was passing would visit the city markets.
