Pope Julius II

The canopy is that of the Sistine Chapel, the massive papal chapel constructed in the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV, for what the chapel is given the name. It was originated at the command of Pope Julius II. Refractory to traditional belief, Michelangelo designed the Sistine Chapel in a standing posture. When they portray Michelangelo performing his customary frescoes, most people believe he was resting down.
