General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana (1794-1876), who was the President of the Republic of Mexico, and David G. Burnet, Interim President of Texas, signed the Treaty of Velasco on May 14, 1836, a few days after the Battle of San Jacinto - part of the Texas Revolution. By means of this peace treaty, Santa Anna recognized the independence of Texas and pledged to stop fighting against it, in exchange for his freedom and a safe retreat of the Mexican troops.
However, since Santa Anna had been taken prisoner and had been forced to sign the document, the Treaty was not ratified by the Mexican government.
The proposed contract is one-sided for two reasons:
I) It is presented under racist patronizing threats;
The white man tries to convince the black man to sign the contract by making him fear for his safety in a world where he is no longer a slave. The white man treats the black man in a patronizing way, that is, acting like the black man couldn't protect himself, and also trying to make the black man fear for his life.
II) The majority of the production will go to the owner of the farm instead of the worker.
Besides signing the contract for fear, the black man would work and get only a small part of his work's production. On the entire next year it was going to be one-twentieth part, and that would later increase slowly. It was a blatant exploitation.
