HI

A nominal group, what is it?

Examples of nominal groups:

My brother has a beautiful house.

In this sentence, "my brother" and "a beautiful house" are nominal groups.

Nominal group: definition

A nominal group can be:

determinant + name: A dog sleeps.

determinant + name + addition to the name: My father's dog sleeps.

determinant + adjective + name: The little dog sleeps.

determinant + noun + adjective: The faithful dog sleeps.

proper name: Philippe is tall.

relative subordinate clause: The book I read is interesting.

⚠️ Note: The nominal group is also a rhythm group. We pronounce a breath the nominal group, we do not pause.

1. nominal group = determinant + name

Examples:

Dogs sleep in the house.

These dogs sleep in the house.

The dogs sleep in the house.

My dogs sleep in the house.

Some dogs sleep in the house.

2. nominal group = determinant + name + complement of the name

Two kinds of complement of the name:

The complement of the name is either (a) a noun or (b) an infinitive verb.

at. The complement of the name is a name

Examples:

My father's dog is sleeping.

The teacher's book is on the table.

The tennis game lasts a long time.

This music box is pretty.

This coffee machine works well.

⚠️ Note: The voice is slightly raised at the end of both names.

b. The complement of the name is an infinitive

Examples:

The washing machine is down.

The iron is hot.

⚠️ Note: The voice is slightly raised at the end of the name and the infinitive.

3 and 4. nominal group = determinant + noun + adjective

The adjective can be before or after the noun.

Examples:

The little car is red.

The little red car is in front of the house.

5. nominal group = proper name

Examples:

Jacques is a computer science student.

Maurice Leblanc is the author of Arsene Lupine.

How do the French celebrate Easter???
PtichkaEL [24]

Answer:

One of the main French Easter traditions are the Easter bells or les cloches de Pâques. ... The bells would then ring on Easter Sunday to announce the Resurrection of Christ and therefore 'return'. So in France it is the bells rather than the Easter bunny who delivers the Easter eggs.
