Shylock lent three thousand ducats, the currency used in Europe for trading in the Middle Ages and until the twentieth century, to Antonio. If Antonio did not return the money on the time established he had to repay with "an equal pound of own flesh". Shylock is not interested in being paid any longer, Antonio was unable to get the amount of ducats of his debt to Shylock. He is determined to cut off the piece of flesh that he desires for that was the original deal. He feels deeply offended and this is the only way he sees justice can be delivered. Accordingly, it is pointless to argue with Shylock.
