Atticus was courageous for agreeing to defend Tom Robinson (an African American ) even when he knows that difficulties will arise for himself and his family, he stood up to Maycomb's prejudice by defending Tom Robinson, he took a stand against racism and thought his children to do the same, while Dolphus is very much ok to protest in silence by feigning alcoholism so that nobody question his choices.
