He seems to win the loyalty of the other animals, bringing literacy to the farm, so that they can better grasp the principles of Animalism (the communism of Leon Trotsky) of which Snowball was the author.

So yes, he was successfull in improving the animals´ abilities to learn to read. But it didn´t help him to become the undisputed leader.

Because he is chased of the farm by Napolean, who wants to get rid of a rival. Just as Stalin got rid of many rivals...
