The main contribution of William Paterson  was to protect the rights as well as look after  the small states.

William Paterson was the person who started the New Jersey Plan. His main aim was to help the small states to protect their rights. He was not ready to accept the proportional representation because he always feared that the small states will be ignored their interest will not be given any priority.
