The indirect object in this sentence is “Charles”. An indirect object in grammar occurs when there is a recipient of a direct object. In this example, “Charles” is the recipient of the direct object “huge birthday gift”.

The best way to identify an indirect object is by asking who or what received something. Bringing the example again, we  answer the question as follows: Charles received a huge gift.
