Mabel's mother died when she was young and was sent to live with her grandparents. Unable to take care of her due to poverty, they sent her to work in the fishing industry located on Lake Volta.
Sometimes, she was forced to work seventeen hours at a go.

After she was rescued, Mabel for the first time was able to attend school.

The 13th amendment is a revision made to the Constitution of the United States of America and provides that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction"
Over 400,000 people are thought to be enslaved in the United States. This is according to the findings of the Global Slavery Index.
According to the Global Slavery Index, 60% of modern slaves come from China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines and Russia.
