What accounts for Darcy's civil behaviour toward Elizabeth and the Gardiners? How does this effect Elizabeth

Darcy is usually a gentleman in public. This time, however, his feelings for Elizabeth are more pronounced. He has already been rebuked once by Elizabeth for not acting in a gentleman like manner. He really wants to make a better impression on her.
