Near the end of WWII, Soviet troops had marched through all of Eastern Europe in an attempt to capture the German capitol of Berlin. Obviously, they were successful, and forced their socialist policies upon the people of East Berlin. In an attempt to keep people subject to these policies, they built the Berlin Wall.
