Once people form into groups, the members start competing with other groups over limited resources or perceived limited resources. We see this over and over in nature with all social species. This is the way we evolved, and you shouldn't expect it to ever stop. Religion is really a side-track. If all religions in the world suddenly vanished, group competition would continue.
