Manoomin and Bannock are the tribal food of indigenous people.

<u>Manoomin:</u>

  • Manoomin is a sacred plant to tribal nations, providing physical, cultural, and spiritual sustenance. It is also known as wild rice is known as Canadian rice, Indian rice or water oats.
  • It is grown in shallow water and gently flowing streams; almost whole plant is submerged in water only the flowering head raising above water level.
  • White Earth the part of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe adopted the rights of Manoomin or wild rice law in December 2018. This being the first law to recognize the rights of a plant species.

<u>Bannock:</u>

  • Bannock is the indigenous universal recipe of bread belonging to the Bannock tribe of Northern pirate. It is usually a round flat bread and cut into pieces before serving.
  • However, the modern recipes for bannock are clearly influenced by the government rations that were distributed on Indian reserves in the late 19th century when access to country foods were restricted by the arrival of non-indigenous settlers, during that time.
