Personification is a figure of speech in which the speaker gives human attributes to objects, animals, or non-human beings. In the excerpt, the author uses it when he or she refers to “Loneliness, worthlessness, and despair” as miserable companions. Here, the author is giving these conditions or feelings the human quality of being present, being a companion, in order to give readers a different insight into his or her experience dealing with depression.
