Very poorly. Many immigrated across the ocean in search of a better life (typically for their families) and sought it in America & the gold rush. Due to the growing arrivals of the immigrants, Americans felt threatened and used this as a means to discriminate and hate against the Chinese population.

I think this because we know that there was a huge racial injustice at the time and Mandela was fighting for black rights. He also used the word reconciliation which means making a view or belief compatible with another or the restoration of friendly relations.
