They had an organized community, irrigation, and a valuable water source (the Nile river).

One reason is that the Nile overflowed and the valley soaked up the water and therefore made it very fertile

Before the civil war was fought mainly for states rights but when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued freeing slaves the war became a moral issue therefore prohibiting Britain from supporting the Confederacy because they recently freed their own slaves and did not support slavery.
