Qin Shi Huangdi ordered hundreds and thousands of people to the Northern part of China to start building the Great Wall. It was hard work for the slaves as at that time there weren't any mechanical machines so you had to work with the hands. They were slaves so they barely got food. The climate was cold therefore many died from this. It was very cruel as the slaves had to leave their family and possibly died to just help the Emperor build the Great Wall.
