After the war, South Carolina began to industrialize rapidly. Several wealthy landowners built some textile factories with the income of the cotton they produced on their haciendas. The textile industry grew and expanded until 1920. Then several pests destroyed many cotton plantations. Some of the landowners were forced to grow other products such as wheat and tobacco.
