An independent clause is a clause that has a complete meaning by itself, this implies independent clause are composed by a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete meaning without requiring any other information to be understood. On the other hand, dependent clauses are those clauses that give extra information related to an independent clause and require it to be complete, additionally, most dependent clauses are linked to dependent clauses by words such as while, because, although, even though, since, if, etc. In the case of "The baby cried" this is an independent clause as it is composed by a subject (The baby) and a predicate (Cried) also the meaning of it is complete, does not contain any word such as while, because or since that would suggest it is dependent and does not require any extra information
