Explanation: The hipolite military system was based on the phalanx formation to help the soldiers who were mostly free citizens, farmers or workers from different occupations who saw the need to defend the city by working together to form a shield against the enemy. The phalanx formation discouraged soldiers from working a lone as this would give the enemy greater advantage against them.

This military formation started with ordinary citizens so it cannot be entirely a military phenomenon.
