These Africans found shelter(squatter camps) in the industrial areas, one of the largest of these squatter camps was near the Johannesburg area, where 20,000 residents formed basis of what would become Soweto.

During the time world war II, the African National Congress was birthed and led by Alfred Xuma (1893-1962), a medical doctor with degrees from the United States, Scotland and England. Xuma presented Jan Smuts(Prime Minister) with the "African's Claims in South Africa", a document which outlined the demands of full citizenship rights, equal distribution of land, fair wages of equal work, and the annulment of segregation.
Nelson Mandela and Anton Lembede led a small faction of the ANC, ANC Youth League in 1944.
<h2>THE FALL</h2><u>THE BEGINNING OF THE END.</u>
Black South Africans protested against racial segregation with much organised boycotts, protests and other forms of resistance. Black African resistance intensified after the white supremacy institutionalized apartheid laws. The laws banned all legal and non-violent forms protests by black South Africans.
In 1960, The law outlawed both ANC (African National Congress) and PAC (Pan African Congress), both parties campaigned for a national government composed by the black majority. Many of its leaders were imprisoned, including ANC leader Nelson Mandela, who symbolized the anti-apartheid movement.
<u>THE UNITED STATES AND THE END OF APARTHEID.</u>
The United States foreign policy, which helped in the movement and advancement of the apartheid regime, underwent a total transformation and played an key role in its downfall.
President Harry Truman's support of the advancement of the civil rights of black people in the United States and his efforts to maintain an ally against the Soviet Union in the southern Africa set the stage for future successors.
In 1986, President Ronald Reagan's veto, enacted the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act imposing the first considerable economic sanctions to be summoned against South Africa for its acts of racial Apartheid.
