How does literal meaning of a word relate to poetry?

English

The literal meaning of a word in poetry usually doesn't relate because most of the time authors are using metaphors and other literary devices to add more life to the poem. However the only occasion in which it might be used is when a poem tells a story because the literal meaning is crucial to telling a story. Hope this helps!
