During the course of Carlos Santana’s career, he hasn’t discussed his relationship or associated any attachment with the whiteness of rock music. Being a Mexican with a non-white background, he was already different from the white rock artists, and could relate much more with black artists who were not only rock musicians, but rappers and musicians of other genres whose non-white races faced a lot of discrimination. Regardless of his Mexican roots, Carlos Santana proved that anybody from a non-white background can become a great rock musician.
