The first significant atonal pieces were composed around 1908 by Arnold Schoenberg. He <span>was an Austrian composer, music theorist, and painter. He was associated with the </span>expressionist movement<span> in German poetry and art, and leader of the </span>Second Viennese School<span>.</span>
