Hammurabi established the first Babylonian Empire and ruled from c. 1792 BC. to c. 1750 BC. He assumed the throne from Sin-Muballit, his father, and expanded the kingdom that eventually encompassed the whole ancient Mesopotamia. Hammurabi was king of 'the four quarters of the world'. He is famous for his work on reforms in the society. His famous Code of laws which dates back to 1754 BC, lists 282 rules and punishments for those who do not abide by them.
