A secondary conflict is a conflict that's important, but it isn't essential.


Story: Two people get lost in the woods and struggle to get out


Main conflict: They're lost

Secondary Conflict: One of them twists their ankle and have a hard time walking


The secondary conflict isn't essential to the story. It's important because it may make it more suspenseful if something were to happen to them, but the story would be just fine without it.
