Both fled from religious persecution, but the puritans (as the root of the name suggests) want purity. But pilgrims, if I'm not mistaken, wanted freedom of worship, the exact opposite of what the puritans fled for. So in one word, religion.

At that time, the plan for westward expansion created internal debate among different groups in united states since it require large amount of investments and could bankrupt the whole country if it failed.

Because of this huge risks, united states' attention was taken mostly by this issue, to the point where we could not seriously be involved in overseas expansion.
