Colonization was a method to obtain an advantage from their neighbors and enemies by increasing their wealth.

First of all, Europe is a continent built on blood because all of the countries fought and tried to conquer each other at a certain point in time. Therefore, before the industrial revolution, they created non-aggression agreements to avoid more conflict. This led them to explorations in the look of wealth because they only preferred stealing wealth than creating it. Thus, they colonized everything they could.
