The sun hits bodies of water (ponds, oceans, pools, puddles) and it evaporates into a gas known as water vapor which goes up and forms a cloud. When the cloud gets heavy the water condensates back into little droplets and falls back to the ground. This is rain.

The fire from the explosion wouldn't stop, and the first responding firefighters died of acute radiation poisoning. The town was evacuated, as it is today. Today, some people consider the area around Chernobyl a natural reserve, as wildlife is growing it the radioactive area.

The vast pollution which occurs globally can have a significant impact on air quality on a local scale. The reason for this is quite simple: polluted air can easily get trapped beneath a cloud cover, or be literally "blown" away to other locations, and when much polluted air gets accumulated, it can have devastating heath effects on a local population, not just to humans, but to animals and plants as well. Overall, the vast global pollution can effect the smallest of regions on an unprecedented scale.
