Which underlying theme of the work is evident in this passage? Perchance they might be formulated thus: "If I am going to be dro

wned—if I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees? Was I brought here merely to have my nose dragged away as I was about to nibble the sacred cheese of life? It is preposterous. If this old ninny-woman, Fate, cannot do better than this, she should be deprived of the management of men''s fortunes. from "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane

The passage above highlights one of <em>The Open Boat</em>'s theme: Man's existence insignificance. The characters in the book often rant against fate, to cover for (the argument Crane's trying to make)  the sense that in the end all there is, is nothingness.

PLEASE HELP ME THIS IS DUE TODAY WILL GIVE BRAINLIEST IF RIGHT
natulia [17]

Answer:

One of three physical objects that tell the story of my life is a pencil. This is because I am able to write anything I want with a pencil. For work, or when something bothers me, for school and etc... Whenever I need to jot down a thought or write something to remember later I can and do use a pencil. Also if I don't want to write down I can draw with a pencil. A pencil can also erase when you make a mistake or something. The second object that tells the story of my life is a book this is because a book gives knowledge. The knowledge I learn in these books can help me in further or present references. Books can also give you more information about a topic or subject. Help you learn something new every day. Books can also strengthen your vocabulary, reduce stress, improve memory skills, and help you do better in writing. Books tell a story of my life because they Improved Focus and Concentration. The third physical object that tells a story of my life is food because it gives me strength and helps my body to grow and be healthy. Food also gives us energy and helps us function. These three things have had a big impact on my life and this is why I choose these specific things because they help me learn to write and help me be energetic.

Convert the following sentence from compound to complex sentence.
m_a_m_a [10]

Answer:

As much as water is an endangered resource, we cannot live without it.

Explanation:

A compound sentence is a sentence that has two independent clauses, meaning there should be a conjunction to connect the two clauses (FANBOYS) or a semicolon.

A complex sentence has one independent clause and one dependent clause.

Note that independent clauses can stand alone as a sentence, meaning they have both a subject and a predicate.

On the other hand, a dependent clause can not stand alone as a sentence, has both a subject and verb, and will most often start with a subordinating conjunction.

<u>We have the sentence:</u>

Water is an endangered resource and we cannot live without it.

<u>We can make it:</u>

As much as water is an endangered resource, we cannot live without it.

As much as is the subordinating conjunction that makes the first clause dependent.

"We cannot live without it" is the independent clause.

You can remove "As much as" and replace it with any subordinating conjunction that makes sense, it's just hard to find a perfect replacement for the conjunction "and."
