The three-field crop rotation system for agriculture was introduced in Europe during the late medieval and early modern period. In this system, fields were divided into three plots, unlike the earlier medieval system where fields were divided into two plots. During autumn one third of the land would be planted with wheat, barley and rye. Crops like oats, peas and beans would be planted in the spring on another third of the land. The remaining third would be left to fallow. The wheeled plough made possible the northward spread of agriculture in Europe.
