The Homestead Acts were a series of laws that were passed in the United States in order to give public or government land to citizens. Nearly 10% of the total area of the United States was given away for free, mostly west of the Mississippi. The first Homestead Act was passed in 1862, allowing all citizens, including women and immigrants, to obtain a piece of land. Since 1866, the Acts included African Americans.
