Johnathan Clarkson Gibbs went south and founded schools for African Americans.

Jonathan Gibbs was a Presbyterian minister and a prominent African-American officeholder during Reconstruction. He was a black activist and political leader. He was born to free parents, and received many educational opportunities in spite of being a black man during the 19th century which represented a great obstacle.

He became one of the most powerful black officeholders in the state during Reconstruction.
