Headright was a legal transfer of land to people who could cover the travel expenses of a worker or a slave to work on the plantations.  

The size of the concession lands varied. Larger land was given to established settlers (100 acres), while newly arrived settlers obtained a smaller portion of land (50 acres).

This measure was intended to promote the work capacity of the English colonies, and thereby to accelerate the development of their economy. Also, Headrights  produced an increase in the population of the colonies.
