After the Spanish-American war, America was given Cuba, <span>Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands, and Guam as parts of the treaty. Cuba however did not become a part of the US territories as it became an independent country.</span>

The areas with the federalist majority were mostly found along the Atlantic seacoast as these areas had much more trade and merchants.
Moreover, most of the first cities to be settled, were on the Atlantic coast and because of this, the biggest part of the population lived in those cities when the federalist party first formed.
