The correct option is (A), Athens. Athens was located at the Argosaronikos Gulf and the Aegean sea was in the south of the Athens. There was no sea close to the ancient Sparta, which built on the bank of the rivers. The rivers worked as a major source of the fresh water for Sparta.

Athens economy depended on two factors: trade and farming. Regarding trade, the use to navigate the sea in order to transport their products to other regions and fortify its trade relations. In the case of Sparta, its economy heavily depended on agriculture. Sparta had a more powerful army. Indeed they were excellent Warriors and military service was an obligation for the Spartans men but did not have a great navy. Athens had not a great army but had the navy for defensive purposes.
